Services provided

I publish books as an offshoot of my ecological consultancy business John Norton Ecology. I can provide a full editing and design service for organisations and authors wishing to publish leaflets, books and other publications. I can also assist with sourcing images, producing maps and other illustrations and outputting dot maps for wildlife atlases. Please contact me at the e-mail address above for further information.

In addition to the titles listed below I currently produce Flora News, the newsletter of the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust's Flora Group (downloadable here) and the Hampshire Bird Report for the Hampshire Ornithological Society (details).

Why the name?

Browndown is a UK Ministry of Defence owned area of coastal vegetated shingle, reed fen and heathland in my home town of Gosport and one of the richest botanical sites in Hampshire, with about 450 species of vascular plants and numerous bryophytes and lichens (including at least 22 species of Cladonia). It is notable for its huge populations of Nottingham Catchfly Silene nutans and colonies of the nationally rare Little-robin Geranium purpureum. Part of the site is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest. Much of my free time is spent recording the wildlife of the Browndown area.

Wild Flowers of Eastern Andalucía by Sarah Ball

This photographic field guide describes a representative selection the most frequent and characteristic species of wild plants to be found in this part of South-east Spain. The author is a regular visitor to the area and has helped run field courses for the University of Reading, the Eden Project and the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. This is the first English language guide covering the interior of the region and is aimed to complement the Spanish language Floras and the English tourist booklets which tend to focus on the better known coastal areas. It is written largely in non-technical language, but includes descriptions of flowers, foliage and other important features and a glossary. The introduction describes the geology, habitats and vegetation types of the region. The book describes 625 species, with 575 illustrated by colour photographs. Published March 2014 (ISBN 978-0-9563961-1-2), softback, 304pp., 725 colour photographs, 1 black & white map. Price £22.95
